Google has introduced a new charging feature, placing a focus on saving battery life on mobile devices. This feature, behaviour begins by automatically disconnecting power as soon as the battery reaches 80% of its full capacity.
Until now, smartphones have traditionally been charged all the way to 100 per cent, but experts in lithium-ion technology that powers smartphones widely agree that charging to around 80 per cent instead gives batteries a longer lifespan.
If you have a recent Pixel device or smartphone with Android 15, you can turn on the new feature under your phone's battery settings. Please note that it will only work when your phone is turned on.
In the meantime, Android's new adaptive charging feature, available on Pixel smartphones, is designed to ensure you have a fully charged phone in case you need to be on the go for an entire day.
This feature examines your charging routines and, based on this information, attempts to fully recharge your battery just before you need the phone. This could mean that if you plug it in before going to bed, it might only charge your phone up to 100% in the last hour before you unplug it.
Other mobile phone makers may also put a charging limit on their smartphones when they release new models with Android 15 or update an existing model.
Samsung has provided battery protection for several tablets and smartphones for a while, including adaptive charging on their current Android version, One UI 6.1 (Android 14).
In Canada, Apple has also been working on managing and conserving battery power since iOS 14, with the Charge Limit and Optimized Charging features available under Settings/Battery/Battery Status & Charging. This is where you can find the equivalent to Android's adaptive charging.
