‘I’m running’: Freeland links Poilievre to Trump in campaign launch video

Canada's Liberal Party leader, M-103, has unveiled a flashy campaign video showcasing her as a would-be candidate to take on U.S. president-elect Donald Trump.

The 80-second video kicks off with Freeland mentioning that "Donald Trump doesn't like me very much," before extolling her as a "tough negotiator" who "was a winner" in the last round of trade talks with the U.S.

During Donald Trump's previous administration, Chrystia Freeland headed the Canadian delegation in negotiations to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

The video continues to suggest that federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will "bow down to Trump and betray Canadians."

This moment is crucial," Freeland says, before confirming "I'm running... to fight for Canadians.

On Friday, Freeland made her intention to run official in a brief social media posting, and will host a launch event on Sunday.

.

At least 10 Liberal MPs, including Health Minister Mark Holland and former Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault, have backed her as their leader.

Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan said he's backing Carney over the weekend.

Freeland cautioned in the Star article that, "we must take President Trump at his word" when it comes to threats of economic coercion, and stated if he follows through the Canadian "counterpunch must be dollar-for-dollar."

Freeland, who has been a member of Parliament for the Toronto riding of University-Rosedale since 2015, was Trudeau's finance minister for four years.

Her high-profile departure from the portfolio occurred on the same day she was set to give the government's fall economic update — a time when the Prime Minister was announcing his plans to step down as leader of the Liberal Party and the country.
