The arrest and dismissal of numerous associates of former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu by Russian authorities have triggered widespread concern among the country's elite.
Last year, the Russian President cracked down on high-ranking government and military officials, resulting in multiple arrests and firings.
According to a report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) was involved in making arrests both within the country's Military Ministry and within its Armed Forces.
The report noted that numerous people had their employment terminated and were detained by Russian authorities, with three being acquaintances of Sergei Shoigu, the study stated.
The former defence minister, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was let go from his post in May of the year 2024. He has since taken on the position of Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
"The uncertainty surrounding the new wave of arrests and Shoigu's own unclear role are clearly causing a lot of anxiety among his close associates. Shoigu himself is basically watching from a safe distance, thanks to the personal guarantees of the President, but he's powerless to protect his team or stop the new round of arrests," the report said.
